REGULATORS 

Location

The Regulators were founded in North and South Carolina. Orange County, North Carolina had the most impact and action. The Battle Alamance took place near Great Almance Creek which is near Orange County.(Learn NC)

Date

The Regulator Movement lasted from 1765-1771. The Battle of Alamance started on May 16,1771 and ended in June ,1771.(Lawlessness on theSouth Carolina Frontier)

Leaders

The Regulators never had an outstanding leader, though several men were prominent in the movement; including James Hunter and Herman Husband. Husband came from a Quaker family. He circulated political pamphlets advocating peaceful reform. James Hunter was also known as a leader during the movement but Husband came first. There were other men like Rednap Howell and William Butler who might have been prominent as well.(Learn NC) 

Groups in Conflicts

The Regulators were against the government and everyone that supported the government. They refused to pay taxes or fees, punished public officials, and interefered with the courts.Governor William Tryon was very displeased with the Regulators because the Regulators hated him.(Learn NC). Gov. Tryon was the leader of the militia to defaet the Regulators. With the Regulators lack of leadership,organization, and adequate arms and ammunition. (Eve of the Revolution)The Regulators were no match for Tryon's militia. They were defeated in the Battle of Alamance in June 1772. (Learn NC)

Chronology of Conflict 

  • 1768- Back-country farmers organized Regulator Movement in attempt to reduce excessive taxes

  • May 1771- Regulators suppressed at Alamance, Gov. Tyron had seven Regulators executed

  • June 1771- Regulators defeated and seven hung after the Battle of Alamance due to poor leadership and lack of equipment. (World Atlas)

Resolution

The Grenville program helped the colonists overcome their internal conflicts and recognize that the policies from London were a threat to all merce, from the closing of the west to land speculation and fur trading, and from the restriction of opportunities for manufacturing. (The Unfinished Nation) Another resoltuion for this conflict was the governamnet found the weak spot of the Regulators and destroyed them.(Learn NC)

Consequences

Many trials were held after the Regulators were deafeated in th Battle of Alamance, resulting in hanging of six Regulatorsat Hillsborough on June 19,1771. Many leaders and soldiers fled to Tennesse until 1772 when they weren't considered outlaws.
