Freedom Summer

In the summer of 1964 about 300 African Americans arrived to protest on June 15 in Jackson, Mississippi. The peaceful protest began to grow up to the thousands because blacks, many of them were out of state, came to protest. This protest was to allow more blacks to vote and more rights in the voting process. Only 7% of blacks in the south before the protest were voting but later grew. The leaders of this protest included the Congress of Racial Equality(CORE) and the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee(SNCC).(History.com) Many whites helped the CORE register blacks to be able to vote and several more were invited to the Freedom Summer. (Unfinished Nation)These two groups also were involved in beatings, arrests, and threats. These blacks fought the fight and didn't give up because they cared so much about freedom. In conclusion, the Freedom Summer wasn't extremely successful but it started several black schools, community houses, and communtity centers in Mississippi. This protest is just a small portion of what blacks have done throughout history and in the world in order to gain freedom.(CORE)
